After
completing his education in Port Elizabeth South Africa,
Roy Charsley was admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa in
1980. Until 1982, he worked initially as State Advocate prosecuting criminal
cases at all levels including appearances in the Appellate Division of the
Supreme Court of South Africa (South
Africa’s highest court at the time). From
1982 Roy commenced private practice in Johannesburg as an Advocate (Trial Lawyer) and moved to Port Elizabeth in 1984.
During his 12 years in private practice in South Africa, Roy conducted trials
over a wide spectrum, from human rights based criminal defenses to commercial
and general civil litigation, including family law, personal injuries cases and
labor disputes covering unfair labor practices, strikes and lockouts and unfair
dismissals.
Mr.
Charsley lectured in Company Law and Law of Contract at Damelin College in
Johannesburg, and later developed course materials and lectured in “Court
Skills and Advocacy” at the University of Port Elizabeth Law Faculty.
In
2000, Mr. Charsley moved his family to Denver
where he accepted a position in the International Department of Certified
Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. and later Financial Planning
Standards Board Ltd. He worked with
Affiliate organizations in 19 different countries and played a significant role
in establishing new Affiliate organizations in Austria,
Brazil, China, Hong Kong,
India, Indonesia, Korea
and Taiwan.
He was admitted as an attorney in Colorado in 2001, and was the director of
legal services for Financial Planning Standards Board from 2004-2006, attending
to general corporate legal work and managed an international trademark
portfolio with over 80 registrations in 30 different countries.
In
May 2007, Mr. Charsley joined Kumpf, Charsley & Hansen LLC., where he does
wills and estate planning, general civil and commercial litigation, family law,
employment litigation, and criminal defenses.
